Nobody in this market publishes hide thickness. It costs us ₹200 for a calliper and fifteen minutes per batch. If any figure above is wrong, tell us and we'll correct it publicly.

The same bag, three years apart.

This is the only argument that justifies what we charge. Plastic-coated leather looks best on the day you buy it. Full-grain looks best in year three.

Day 1

Even colour, tight grain, sharp edges. Slightly stiff in the hand.

Month 6

The corners have darkened where it's held. The flap has learned one crease and kept it.

Year 2

Colour deepened two shades and gone uneven, which is correct. Month-four scratches are now part of the surface.

Year 5

Hide and Luxe own bag. Restitched once at the strap, free, by the man who made it.

Look Beyond the Label

A leather label doesn't tell you everything. Learn a few simple ways to look, feel, and understand the leather itself, whether you're looking at ours or someone else's.

Drag a fingernail firmly across the surface. Full grain lightens along the scratch and then fades back within a few hours. Coated or bonded leather does not change at all, because you are not touching leather. You are touching a printed polyurethane film.

Look at a cut edge, on a strap or a flap. Full grain shows a dense, fibrous cross-section that is the same material all the way through. Bonded leather shows a flat coloured skin over a grey pulp core, the way plywood shows its layers.

Study the grain up close. A hide is a record of an animal, so the pores are irregular — different sizes, uneven spacing, the odd scar. A printed finish repeats. Find the same mark twice and you are looking at a pattern, not a skin.

Put your nose to the inside of the bag, where finishes are thinnest. Vegetable-tanned hide smells faintly sweet and woody. Synthetics smell of chemicals or of nothing at all. This is the least scientific test and the hardest one to fake.

Why We Started

We started Hide & Luxe in 2025 because we got tired of buying bags that looked like leather in the pictures and felt nothing like it in our hands.

So we decided to make them ourselves.

There are two of us behind Hide & Luxe. We pack the orders, answer your messages, look at the product photographs, and deal with anything that goes wrong. If something we make doesn't hold up the way it should, you won't have to explain it to a call centre. You'll hear from us.
